Sheertex revolutionizing Canadian fashion and sustainable business one pair of tights at a time

It all starts with pantyhose woman’s worst enemy.

No one has ever been happy with pantyhose and that’s because they were originally made by a man. Sheertex  is made by woman for woman and you can definitely tell.

The pair of the most comfortable and durable tights, solving one of the core issues women have faced with getting dressed since well pantyhose were invented and became standard.

CEO Katherine Homuth revolutionized  business and fashion production in Canada and the importance of sustainability within these practices.

Sheertex tackles the main issues that are needed to be spoken off and done in order to establish sustainability on  a very large scale.

They firstly have conquered an issue that has led to the filling of multiple landfills by creating a pair of tights that will to directly quote their website:

“We have miniaturized one of the world’s strongest polymers, typically used in ballistics and climbing equipment, to create impossibly resilient tights designed to be 10x more durable than traditional tights.”

From a technical standpoint, they revolutionized the fashion industry through innovative creation of new knitting techniques and new fibres. Not themselves considered fully sustainable fabrics and fibres but solving such a large issue of stockings in the landfill must unfortunately come at a cost.

Secondly, they have become a leader in transparency, which is a key aspect of sustainability in fashion, without the transparency of the whole supply chain that is where the biggest issues arise. Looking at fast fashion, theirs is no transparency, which means no accountability within the supply chain creating dramatic disparity within it. They openly share their ESG (Environmental, social and governance) reports for download on their website, which is beyond rare. They also openly share their manufacturing facilities on all social media platforms, they put extra effort into making sure the public has access to the information.

Sheertex is a sustainable leader not for an overwhelming “greenness” that is impossible to achieve in fashion anyways. They are sustainable by constantly trying to ameliorate their practices and reduce the harm of large-scale productions within Canada all while being aware that they are not as sustainable as they should be and there are flaws to improve within their production line.

It must be noted their environmental score is quite low but they are B Corp certified which assure a baseline of sustainability in their practices. The product may not be as sustainable as it could be in their production and distribution but in terms of consumption it is more sustainable and durable. It’s very important to note being  made according to B Corp and Environment Canada’s standards assures a certain amount of awareness in their practices.

Thirdly, they brought manufacturing back to Canada, which will absolutely have devastating effects on our ecosystems but why is it fair we consume products that we don’t have to reap the consequences of. Even though manufacturing can never be sustainable, bringing production to Canada assures an ethical standard for their products, their employees and the environment.

This will start to generate a circular economy for the tights with lower environmental effects, boosting the canadian economy and sustainable growth within canadian production standards.

The brand is actively seeking to become a vertically integrated company which will assure that each step in the life of the tights think of the environment and the client before all.

Overall, Sheertex is revolutionizing sustainability within a large-scale business in fashion, addressing one of the longest-standing issues in fashion.  They are the first to obtain such large-scale success while maintaining their brand integrity and their transparency.

They’re is a lot of room for improvement when it comes to its environmental impact, fabric technology and the product’s full circle life but they are aware of these changes and actively act to make a difference.

There's much more positivity and sustainability  to be found in brands that are aware and acknowledge their issues and that genuinely prioritize sustainability in all their practices instead of a marketing tactic.
